President's Letter

Dear Fellow BHRA Members:

Fall is definitely in the air as I write this. The last few days we have experience frost at night and we began to say good-bye to bits of nature that weren’t strong enough to endure. Today is sunny and beautiful as I sit on my deck enjoying the warmth of the sun and relaxing from an extremely busy work week. As I talk with many of you lately, we all share similar stories on how busy our jobs have been in recent weeks.

Governor Scott Walker has signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, October 13, 2011 as "Human Resources Professionals Day". The proclamation states:

· The State of Wisconsin recognizes the importance of the Human Resources profession in the recruitment, development and retention of a qualified workforce for Wisconsin’s employers; and

· Wisconsin’s Human Resources Professionals are trained and responsible for the strategic planning to put the right people, in the right place, at the right time, with the right attitude to meet the needs of Wisconsin’s Consumers of goods and services; and

· The Human Resources Professional has become a vitally important part of every organization in this country accepting ethical responsibility for promoting and fostering fairness and justice for all employees.

At the end of Bob Gregg’s September Legal Update, he wrote “A 9/11 Perspective to Human Resources”. In the article he states:

The day of, and after, any disaster, what do people do? They go to work!

Because in our society, work is a unifying factor. It is the place of stability. If the world is crazy, at least "I have a job" - "a place to go, where I have a role and I know what to do." It is our daily rock in the storm.

It is at work where we maintain the national economy and our own economic stability. It is at work where our rights and responsibilities regarding discrimination, privacy and expression are most often examined. It is at work where our national diversity comes together and we learn to tolerate, respect and accomplish together for the common good.

Workplace Management is an often stressful task, and we get so lost in daily details that we, and those around us, often don't see the bigger picture of the importance of the workplace and the human resource people who keep it functioning, day after day. Though it is less visible than soldiers, police, firefighters and politicians, the workplace is the thing which holds our society together, and the Human Resource and Office Manager role is the lubricant which makes it work. That is a heroic role, and you deserve to be recognized and praised for what you have done and continue to do in maintaining our country's strength and stability.

I enjoyed reading this article and the Governor’s proclamation. Both put into perspective, why we as professionals chose the human resources field.

October is another busy month for us as HR professionals. Please take time this month to pat yourself on the back and be proud that you truly are in a profession that makes a difference!
